Wanzhang Wang wins Toronto Biotechnology Initiative Award
The Department of Biology is proud to announce that Wanzhang Wang won the Toronto Biotechnology Initiative Award.
What it means to win this award
It’s an honour to receive the Toronto Biotechnology Initiative Award for the 2020-2021 academic year. It was my last year of undergraduate study. I am so glad to be acknowledged for my hard work in Biotechnology courses.
Studying on pandemic times
The 2020-2021 school year has been challenging for both students and instructors. All of us were looking for the right way to work, study and connect during the pandemic. Although remote learning brought a bunch of inconveniences, in exchange, we had a chance to experience plenty of useful online tools (e.g. Zoom and MS team) that can make our post-pandemic group study even more efficient. Since most courses offer both synchronous and asynchronous lectures, students were able to not only go through lecture materials with instructors and ask questions in real-time, but also go back to the lecture recordings to resolve confusion when reviewing the notes. Also, my timetable was more flexible as it was customized based on personal needs and upcoming deadlines. For instance, I was able to make time for an important experiment by watching the lectures on another day for my BIO481 research project.
What's next?
Currently, as a new graduate, I am working in a clinical lab, in an attempt to explore different types of Biology studies before deciding a research direction for my postgraduation education. I plan on returning to academia after 1 year of work. The award further encourages me to pursue a career in Biology. I look forward to embarking on a journey of science and discovery.
