What if we could engineer a molecule to target cancer cells but leave healthy cells unharmed? Professor Patrick Gunning seeks to do just that with his latest research to design a molecule that targets cancer-regulating proteins called STAT. Gunning has developed a powerful family of molecules that disable the STAT proteins and stops the spread of numerous cancers without the painful side-effects of traditional chemotherapy.
According to the Toronto Star, "[h]is lab, with its 24 students, is enjoying international attention with the design of a drug that cures breast cancer, multiple myeloma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in mice."
