Media Specialist and former Broadcast Journalist
Karlene Nation tells stories. The U of T Mississauga alumna has spent nearly 30 years in the news business as a reporter and producer, working for most of Toronto's major print and broadcast media outlets.
Nation earned a BA in political science degree from UTM before completing a two-year journalism program at Humber College. She started her career as a communications officer at the Toronto Stock Exchange, which led the fledgling reporter to stints with the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail's Report on Business.
In 1993, Nation joined the CTV News Toronto team ias a general assignment reporter where she quickly developed a reputation for getting exclusive interviews that other reporters didn’t get.
On her own initiative, Nation established relationships with contacts in diverse communities across the city. Her Rolodex of contacts grew into the CTV Diversity Database, which lists over 4,000 contacts from more than 80 ethno-cultural groups across the country. As a result of her commitment to finding diverse story and expert sources, Nation was appointed to the position of CTV’s Diversity Producer. In this role, Nation generated story ideas for Canada AM, CTV National, CTV Newsnets and CTV Toronto, and educated community groups about how to get stories to air.
In 2014, after three decades in the news business, Nation left broadcast media to establish her own communications company, OneNation Media Group. As a consultant, Nation now uses her expertise as a media insider to help clients become newsmakers. The firm specializes in organizing press conferences, special events and corporate video production.
Nation is a popular motivational speaker who has been recognized with multiple awards, including the African Canadian Achievement Award and the Queen diamond Jubilee Medal.
