2024 Alumni Awards of Distinction

The UTM Alumni Awards of Distinction are among the highest honours presented by the University of Toronto Mississauga, celebrating exceptional alumni and community members who exemplify leadership, innovation, and a commitment to community service. Representing a community of over 72,000 graduates worldwide, the awards highlight the enduring impact of UTM alumni in shaping society and enriching the university community. 

This year, UTM and its Alumni Association (UTMAA) proudly hosted the Alumni Awards of Distinction ceremony to recognize three outstanding individuals whose remarkable contributions continue to inspire and uplift the U of T community.  

Councillor Veronica King-Jamieson   
Paul W. Fox Award

Councillor Veronica King-Jamieson has dedicated over three decades to serving the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) community. From coordinating social services to creating cultural initiatives for events like the Pan/Parapan Am Games, she has been a steadfast advocate for Indigenous placemaking and reconciliation. A founding member of the Indigenous Action Group at UTM, King-Jamieson bridges the rich cultural heritage of the MCFN with the university community, fostering mutual understanding and respect. This award acknowledges her outstanding contributions to campus life and the broader UTM community.

 

 

Chris Thompson (BCom ’12)
Desmond Parker Outstanding Young Alumni Award

Chris Thompson is a trailblazing leader in community development and capacity building. As the Executive Director of The Federation of Black Canadians, he leads a national organization advancing the interests of Canadians of African descent. He also founded Skills for Life, a Peel Region charity empowering youth and young adults through life skills development. “UTM was definitely the cornerstone and the inspiration for propelling me into the professional and community work I do today.”, Thompson shared. “It’s been a blessing to be a part of the UTM community and the alumni network, and I say to my fellow alumni and even students: get involved, get engaged, and try new things.” This award honors his dedication to professional excellence and community service, exemplifying the values of alumnus Desmond Parker.

Hazel McCallion Alumni Award of Excellence

Hampton, an Anishinaabe artist, designer, model, and advocate, is reshaping the fashion industry through her commitment to inclusivity, mental wellness, and authentic representation. Since launching her eponymous brand, Hampton has gained international acclaim, with her designs gracing the Golden Globes and being worn by icons such as Lizzo. Recognized by Vogue magazine as the "number one Canadian brand to keep your eye on," Hampton's work champions diversity and challenges the norms of the fashion world. “Receiving the Hazel McCallion Award of Excellence is deeply meaningful to me.”, says Hampton. “Hazel’s legacy reminds us that living with purpose isn’t just about pushing forward—it’s about lifting others up, standing firm in our values, and creating space for the next generation of changemakers.” This award celebrates her innovation, creativity, and advocacy for a more inclusive society.

 

A Night of Inspiration and Connection 

The ceremony brought together a dynamic gathering of alumni, university leaders, community stakeholders, and the families and friends of this year’s honourees. More than a celebration of individual achievements, the event reinforced the deep ties within the UTM community.
