This event will showcase Black excellence - the beauty and complexities of being Black in a world where anti-Black racism is so prevalent. We will discuss the real life challenges faced in the workplace and academia due to skin colour, ethnicity, country of origin, cultural or religious beliefs, gender, sexuality, and accents - offering tools and strategies to navigate those challenges.

BLACK ATHLETES ON THE MARGINS: I AM MORE!
Black athletes across the globe tend to find belonging, acceptance and achievement in sport. They are often referred to as exceptional, and are treated as such. However, this treatment doesn’t protect them from the everyday racial and systemic injustices they face due to their various social identities, the most salient, their skin colour. Now with Covid-19, they are faced with new challenges, which has been heightened by a forced stand-still in their professional athletic careers.

Join us for a screening of the film Ninth Floor by Mina Shum, followed by a Q&A. In her first feature-length documentary, director Mina Shum takes a penetrating look at the sit-in at Sir George Williams University which happened in February 1969 when a protest against institutional racism snowballed into a 14-day student occupation.
