Join us for Black Career Pathways in STEM to hear from Black professionals as they share with Black-identifying students and recent graduates about their career paths and education in STEM, their challenges and successes along the way, and the lessons learned as they continue to navigate their futures.
The event will consist of two panel discussions as well as networking opportunities to connect 1:1 with alumni panelists. The U of T Black Alumni Association will also be present to connect with students and recent alumni about staying connected post-graduation.
Through a moderated panel discussion and audience participation, attendees will:
- Identify one to two alternative career options or non-linear pathways that utilize a STEM degree
- Address the financial challenges in pursuing graduate/professional school education
- Learn to be comfortable researching and exploring universities and post-graduate education options
- Identify two or three skills that they would like to showcase or develop to support their career journeys in STEM
- Connect directly with Black professionals in various fields and post-graduate degree programs.
Please note that this event is directed to self-identifying Black students and recent graduates to collectively create a space that enhances the Black experience at UTM and strengthens community connections, but all are welcome to attend.

Haze Schepmyer (HBSc ‘00)
Life-Event Transitions Mediator, Speaker and Yoga Teacher
Haze is a Life-Event Transitions Mediator, Speaker and Yoga Teacher. Through powerful and unconventional two-way conversations, she can help individuals explore healthy tools and tactics for generating strength, constructing stability and producing stamina as they transition through life events such as: losing loved ones, changing gears in a career, rediscovering self, leveling-up leadership or recreating identity. Whether she is facilitating one-with-one meetings or workshops, Haze can help individuals with authoring a proactive and personalized path rooted in forward-focused movements for their journey. She was UTM’s Valedictorian in 2000.
Sandrina Ntamwemezi is a Public Health Nurse at the Region of Peel Public Health, working in Communicable Diseases. She is a UTM alumna, graduating in 2011 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology. While at UTM she spent 3 years working with the Peer Health Education team, directed by Health Services. Through this work, Sandrina discovered a passion for Health promotion. After graduation, she enrolled in an accelerated nursing program at York University in 2012 and began her nursing journey in the fall of 2014. In July 2015 she began working for Peel Public Health, where she has worked in school health programming, and most extensively in case and contact management. In the winter of 2020, Sandrina accepted a position as a clinical instructor for the Bloomberg School of Nursing, fostering her love for teaching. Her passion continues to be in health promotion and public health administration, which brings her to a crossroads in her career.
Sandrina was born in Kigali, Rwanda, and like many in Canada, found her adoptive home in Mississauga. She loves her family, and being outdoors when the outdoors are not fighting her. She is excited and humbled to be part of this panel and to learn from fellow panelists and attendees.
Amal is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Ontario Public Service (OPS), where she has worked since 2017. In her role, she focuses on completing research and analysis to develop evidence-informed insights on a wide range of social and economic policy issues. Her undergraduate background in Psychology and Anthropology at UTM, combined with her Masters degrees in both Public Health and Social Work have allowed her to bring a unique interdisciplinary perspective to her work and address complex challenges from multiple perspectives.
Nigel Holgate is an environment and sustainability professional and a Class of 2021 graduate of the University of Toronto's Master of Science in Sustainability Management program. He is currently a Program Analyst with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, where he collaborates with cities and conservation authorities on protecting sources of drinking water. Nigel is also the owner of Yari Tea Products, a sustainable yerba mate tea business, started through the iCube startup program at UTM.
Recent Alumni
Kareem is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he completed a B.Sc. (Chemistry) in 2020, and a M.Sc. (Chemistry) in 2022. In 2018 he started working as a research scientist with Kamal Pharmachem Inc. This work included the development of catalysts and processes for the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol, and the manufacture of pharmaceutical products.
In 2020 he co-founded Kare Chemical Technologies Inc. which specializes in the catalytic manufacture of pharmaceutical grade cannabinoids. He has several issued patents. His patented technologies are licensed to companies in North America, Europe and Asia to produce pharmaceuticals and high purity, single-component, pharmaceutical-grade cannabinoids. Jawahir is a first-year PhD candidate in experimental psychology at the University of Toronto. She is supervised by Dr. Joanne Chung, and her research focuses on understanding how Black emerging adults make sense of their identities and how this relates to their emotional well-being during university. She is very passionate about collaborating with community members in her research.
Jawahir completed her Honours Bachelor of Science degree at UTM in 2023, where she specialized in psychology and minored in biology. During her undergraduate studies, she worked as a research assistant in multiple labs, including the Chung Lab, the Childhood Learning and Development (ChiLD) Lab, and the Skip Lab. Additionally, she served as a club executive and mentor for the Psychology Association of Undergraduate Students at Erindale.
Tobi is an emerging young professional who is enthusiastic about further exploring her passion through research in the areas of equity conceptualization and measurement, technology transfer in health systems, and non-communicable diseases in LMICs. Tobi was also an oral presenter at the 2024 Canadian Conference on Global Health where she discussed her master's research findings and critical narrative review.
She works as a clinical research assistant at McMaster Children's Hospital in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She also completed a semester abroad in Netherlands at Maastricht University specializing in Implementing Innovations on a Global Scale. Her team won first place in their program's innovation pitch competition with a product aimed to reduce alcohol abuse and waste generation globally. Expanding their efforts, they have become 2024 Youth Impact Challenge Canada finalists and are optimistic about their efforts.
Tobi holds an Honours BSc from the University of Toronto specializing in Biology for Health Sciences and double minoring in Psychology and Biomedical Communications. Throughout her undergraduate career, she was committed to creating brave spaces for minority students through mentoring (SEE@UTM), teaching assistantships, Residence Don, UTM Black Art steering committee member, African Students Association, and volunteering.
Everton Smith is a first-year medical student at the University of Toronto. He holds a Masters degree in Medical Physiology from UofT, and completed his undergraduate studies in Biology at UTM.
During his undergrad, he was part of UHN's Multi-Organ Transplant Student Research Training Program, was a mentor with the Erindale Biology Society, and played for UTM's tri-campus hockey team. He is also a big fan of the Leafs and Raptors.
