Shannon ZhengB. of Science - Biomedical Science

University of Ottawa

Shannon Zheng graduated from the University of Ottawa in Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biomedical Science. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Shannon engaged in research, volunteer and club activities while maintaining her status on the Dean’s Honour List.

Shannon earned various research grants including UROP and NSERC USRA. She spent her UROP award evaluating water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) related knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of rural Haitian women following a post-disaster. She suggested potential interventions to improve the quality of WASH practices and presented her research at a symposium. Her NSERC project focused on determining the presence of acoustic communication in the weakly electric brown ghost knifefish, Apteronotus Leptorhynchus. She used a hydrophone and computational modelling to record potential sound waves from the weakly electric fish.

In addition to her academic and research achievements, Shannon volunteered weekly at the St. Vincent Bruyere Hospital where she assisted patients with meals and activities. She was also the captain of the uOttawa Table Tennis team and in the 2013 North American Collegiate Table Tennis Championships, Shannon helped win a silver medal for the uOttawa women’s team. Additionally, she trained on the Canadian National Table Tennis team and represented Canada in numerous international tournaments. In her second year of university, Shannon was a candidate for the London 2012 Olympic Games and featured on the SportsOttawa newspaper. Shannon’s participation in table tennis allowed her to hone skills such as teamwork and leadership.

Upon completion of the MMI program, Shannon hopes to integrate her science background with the business skills gained from the program to pursue a career in the healthcare sector.
