KATHERINE RATHGEBER

Katherine RathgeberHonours B. of Science - Biology and Medical Science

University of Western Ontario

Katherine graduated in 2014 with an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario, completing a double major in biology and medical science. While continuing to maintain a high academic standing, Katherine was also involved in community outreach programs and intramural sports during her time at Western.

Katherine realized the profound importance of innovation during the summer of 2012 when she had the opportunity to work as a summer student doing research on surgical innovation. She worked in the Keenan Research Centre at St. Michael's Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Teodor Grantcharov where she assisted in his research on the development of an “O.R. black box”. This project, based on the black box concept used in aviation, was developing a technology to support the monitoring of surgeries to pinpoint errors and develop a mechanism to help surgeons evaluate and improve their performance. She is now keen to take on the challenges and opportunities provided by the MMI program to broaden and deepen her understanding of the business and management side of innovation and to prepare for a career in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industries.

Katherine has a passion for travel having previously explored China, South Korea and Israel and in June 2015 returned to Canada after spending 3 months travelling throughout Europe. She believes that travel is transformative and pushes you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. Katherine leads an active lifestyle having spent 7 years as a competitive figure skater and is now an avid runner , completing her first half-marathon in 2014.
