An apple for teacher? How quaint

20 May 2010 - 1:15pm

Three plastic horses prance next to Monika Havelka's computer. A nearby shelf proudly displays an antler from a white-tailed deer. And what's that? A bone?

My students give me all sorts of things, says Havelka, a biology lecturer at U of T Mississauga. One person gave me a scute from a turtle shell, another a shell necklace. But what says You're a great biology teacher better than the gift of a bone from a dead raccoon?

The Erindale College Special Response Team (ECSpeRT) has brought home the John F. Bassett award, recognizing their excellence and performance throughout 2009. On Saturday, March 27, the ECSpeRT team was chosen to receive the award, a trophy and a cheque for $500, over the 150 other eligible community service divisions across Ontario.

There are very strong teams in Ontario, says Dianne Rende, executive director at St. John Ambulance Mississauga, but in 2009, ECSpeRT stood head and shoulders above the rest.

During her time there, she observed and collected data on the officers.

Congratulations to U of T for a very successful United Way campaign, said Scott Mullin, vice-president, government and community relations, TD Bank Financial Group. Now -- surely a million dollar target is what the university should be aiming for next?
