New English language test centre opens at UTM

UTM Staff

Residents of Mississauga and the surrounding area who need to prove their English language proficiency in order to gain admission to university or college or to gain employment can now do so locally by taking the widely-accepted IELTS test at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM).

UTM is the newest test centre for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is used by more than 9,000 educational institutions, government agencies, businesses and professional organizations around the world to assess the ability to communicate in English. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

In 2013, more than 2.2 million people took the IELTS to open doors throughout the English-speaking word.  The test is available in 135 countries, and is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world.

IELTS is recognized as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for the workplace, immigration and professional accreditation. Colleges and universities around the world, including UTM, use test results to determine whether students will be able to comprehensively engage in classes that are taught in English only.

The IELTS test centre at UTM is now accepting candidates for test dates beginning in September 2014. Further information about the test, the application process and a full schedule of test dates is posted at www.utm.utoronto.ca/ielts
