Professor Ulrich Krull, until recently UTM’s vice-principal (special initiatives), assumed a six-month appointment as UTM’s acting vice-president and principal, effective July 1 and continuing to Dec. 31, 2015.

His appointment, approved by Governing Council in May, is concurrent with a six-month administrative leave by Professor Deep Saini, UTM’s vice-president and principal. Krull was recommended to Council for the position following consultation with the UTM community.

“I am delighted to assume this position at such a transitional time for the University of Toronto Mississauga,” Krull said. “We are continuing to evolve as a campus, with the goal of educating and supporting the leaders of tomorrow who will help our city and nation thrive in a globally competitive world. We are building on the strengths of the university, the City of Mississauga and the region, and it is UTM’s strong community partnerships and focus that will continue to play a significant role in our success.”

Krull is a professor of analytical chemistry and holder of the AstraZeneca Chair in Biotechnology. He is also recognized as one of the leading analytical chemists in Canada. He previously served at UTM as vice-principal for research, as vice-dean for graduate studies and as associate dean of sciences. An active member of the university community, he has assumed various leadership roles including chair of the Healthy City Stewardship Centre and vice-chair of Advantage Mississauga.

He has served on numerous industry advisory boards, is an advisor to organizations that support acceleration of commercialization opportunities and is a member of the board for the I-CUBE, UTM’s accelerator. He led the creation of the UTM Master of Biotechnology program, the laboratory infrastructure knows as the Centre for Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology, the Institute for Management & Innovation, and was instrumental in the creation of the Research Innovation Commercialization Centre that now serves the Region of Peel as part of the Ontario Network of Excellence.

Past awards and honours include U of T’s Faculty Excellence Award (recognizing excellence in research, teaching and service), the UTM Teaching Excellence Award, the inaugural Outstanding Contributor  Award from the School of Continuing Studies, and the McBryde Medal and Maxxam Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (the top awards for analytical chemistry research in Canada).

Krull’s research interests focus on bioanalytical research and the development of molecular diagnostics technology for biomedical and environmental applications. He received his PhD from U of T in 1983.
