Despite official claims of tolerance and inclusion in Canada, black populations within the Greater Toronto Area have a historically tenuous relationship with local law enforcement agencies. Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, assistant professor of sociology, examines some of the causes of this tension by exploring perspectives on race and policing from both sides of the “thin blue line” at UTM In Your Neighbourhood | Race and Policing in the GTA.
In addition to presenting his own theory of “mutual disdain”, Professor Owusu-Bempah will also give voice to different segments of the GTA's black communities as they detail their perceptions of and experiences with the police.
Registration is closed.
Hors d’oeuvres will be served. Cash bar.
